Capital City Lions Club
Santa Fe, NM
The Lions are noted for their programs to assist individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The Capital City Lions Club sponsors several sight related programs within our community:
Sight Saving Program - This program provides eyeglasses for the needy and is our flagship program, consistent to our pledge to Helen Keller to be “Knights of the Blind”. Both Capital City and Host Lions clubs contribute $2,000 annually to a joint program for Santa Fe. This program provides glasses for needy students who otherwise fall through the cracks of government programs. Lenscrafters provides lenses free with $50 coupons provided by this program. When the coupons run out, Capital City pays Lenscrafters or Accent on Vision.
Glasses Recycling - Recycling isn't a new concept. Many people have been recycling for many years now. We recycle glass, plastic, newspaper etc. The Lions have also been recycling eyeglasses for many years. The next time you purchase a new pair of glasses, why not ask your eye care professional where you can leave your old specs to be recycled? Both Lenscrafters and Accent on Vision collect glasses to be recycled through the Lions Recycling Program.
Eye Screening - Lions Multiple District 40 owns a large van that is outfitted with facilities for a doctor to perform eye exams for the needy. Lions from both Capital City & Host Clubs provide administrative services and informal checks for visual acuity. Our in-town screenings are most often held at La Familia Medical Center whose staff organizes the medical needs of participants.
Villa Terese Clinic - Our club has had a long-term relationship with Villa Terese Clinic. The clinic has been helpful to us in screening the needy who apply to us for assistance.
